Muse magazine is published nine times a year and features consistently smart material on science, history and the arts. It's a fantastic magazine targeted to readers ages 9 to 14. The design is smooth and streamlined, relying on the material, not gimmicks, to keep readers engaged.

The short pieces and longer-length articles are thoughtful, timely and appealing. The 2012 October issue, for instance, had a Halloween theme and featured an engaging piece about zombies, as well as shorter pieces on bat disease and poisonous rats.

Nine cartoon muses are scattered in the page margins of each issue. They're cute spunky little characters and one of a few regular features. Another is a popular cartoon called Kokopelli & Company, which addresses the magazine's theme each issue.

Muse is a smart mix of age-appropriate and thought-provoking articles. A recent issue on the body, for instance, included a piece called "Video Games Do a Body Good," and the cartoon makes jokes about Minecraft, the popular 3D building game.

The material is fresh. Readers are encouraged to contribute. It's good food for young brains.
