Review:

Cricket is the signature publication of the Cricket family of magazines, which also includes Ladybug, Spider, and Click among other titles. The focus of Cricket is on quality fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and visual art for tweens and young teens. Each issue is supplemented by a crossword puzzle and a contest for reader-produced fiction, poetry, or art.

Not every child has the same reading preferences, and Cricket accommodates for that. The October issue has stories about a contemporary family's spelunking trip; a Celt boy Hamish on the night of Samhain; a spooky sleepover party; a Sicilian man who meets a wizard in league with the devil; and a fantasy land ruled by an Ogre King. Each story is paired with beautiful illustrations that reflect its tone and content.

Like the entire Cricket family of publications, Cricket is advertisement-free, putting the focus on the actual content. This is a classic magazine for encouraging children's literacy and developing their appreciation of good writing.
