Babybug, a previous Parents' Choice Award winner, remains a charming serial for eager young readers. A story about Kim and her toy bunny Carrots opens each issue, and illustrated nursery rhymes, Edward Lear poems, finger plays, and original poems for children round out the rest of the magazine. As a parent, I have consistently been reminded through this publication of poems and songs I'd forgotten I knew; I have also learned new finger plays and have been introduced to children's writers and illustrators I didn't know before, so that reading Babybug with my son has been enriching for both of us. The illustrations vary in style, from beautifully detailed and painterly to blocky and cartoon-like, so that babies and their grownups can enjoy many different kinds of art. The stories involving human characters are, moreover, illustrated with a thought for racially diverse readers. The pages are sturdy, a must for any media targeted for young children; our issues from years past are still in excellent, readable condition, having survived numerous re-readings and many travels in overstuffed backpacks.
