Review:

ChickaDEE is an excellent variety magazine that offers an appealing mix of stories, puzzles, crafts, and thematic informational features for younger grade-school children. Like all of the Owlkids serials, it is targeted less toward dedicated readers than toward kids who prefer other kinds of engagement with the printed page, like matching games, puzzles, and drawing. That being said, the stories and science features are age-appropriate and interesting, and elaborate creatively on the central theme of each issue. A running animated strip, "Daisy Dreamer," follows the adventures of a girl who solves a problem in each episode by changing into an animal whose special qualities are invaluable for the situation; the plots of these strips are often clunky, but children who are interested in animals and are ready to be engaged in scientific inquiry may be intrigued by them. The layout of ChickaDEE, like the other Owlkids publications, tends to be busy and colorful. The visual stimulation enhances the features, and it keeps the pages exciting without making them feel crowded or difficult to navigate. Reasonably priced and entertaining for a variety of children, ChickaDEE is an excellent choice for young readers looking for a year's worth of reading fun.
