Review:

The National Geographic Kids website is a companion to the magazine of the same name. As one would expect from National Geographic, the site is filled with beautiful photographs and videos depicting nature and culture from around the world. There are sections dedicated to Animals and Countries, and a Homework Help page with useful reference materials. In the Fun Stuff section, children can explore a wealth of craft ideas, recipes, science experiments, jokes, and more. And, of course, there are games. These include simple puzzles and fill-in-the-blanks and more complex racing and maze ones.

National Geographic Kids emphasizes reader contributions to its website. My Shot, a section where kids share and rate each others' photos depicting nature and culture, is prominently featured on the homepage. The photos shared are not self-portraits or pictures of friends, but instead tend to feature landmarks, beautiful scenery, and cultural events. DogEared, the book blog, features kids' reviews of books ranging from new sci-fi and American history to classic fiction like Animal Farm.

The National Geographic Kids site is a great platform for initiating a trip around the world from home. By encouraging participation, it teaches children to be active observers of their world.
