Review:

Elmo's Alphabet Challenge features three popular Sesame Street characters (Elmo, Telly, and Abby) who accidentally get trapped inside a video game. To escape, the characters must compete in the video game's challenges, which require them to master the alphabet. It's a clever educational device for children ages 2 to 6, who are sure to be learning as well as laughing throughout this movie-length feature.

The DVD offers Sesame Workshop's iconic blend of live-action puppetry, computer animation, and traditional animation, with plenty of musical interludes. Even so, the focus never strays far from its educational mission to teach alphabet letter recognition.

Bonus extras include Spanish and English language options; activity pages; parent tips; and short animated storybooks devoted to each letter of the alphabet, complete with read-along captions. The DVD also includes a colorful fold-out alphabet poster.

Including the storybook extras and the feature story, Elmo's Alphabet Challenge totals 98-minutes of viewing, all of it as enriching as it is entertaining. That's no surprise, considering the program comes from the pros at Sesame Workshop. Elmo's Alphabet Challenge earns an A for value on all levels: consumer, education, and entertainment.
