Adventure to Fitness - Mr. Marc's Adventure Through TimeSpring 2013 DVD
Adventure to Fitness blends physical exercise and health information with adventures built around varied themes, including history, foreign countries, and dinosaurs. According to the company website, the series was designed for classroom use as a response to America's childhood obesity epidemic. Nothing in the content is tied to a particular educational curriculum, though, so Adventure to Fitness certainly could be watched and enjoyed at home too.
This DVD includes three thirty-minute Adventure to Fitness episodes led by an energetic live-action character called Mr. Marc. He's joined by a cast of animated and live-action friends, and backed by bubbly music and bright animation. Episodes clip along at a fairly brisk pace, mixing exercise, a loose storyline, and trivia moments hosted by young children. At times, program elements and characters feel too much likes ones seen on Dora the Explorer, The Wiggles, and Blues Clues - but Adventure to Fitness offers enough original elements to keep it from feeling totally derivative of those popular children's programs.
DVD extras include a music video sing-along with an upbeat tune encouraging kids to "get up and have some fun." It also has three brief segments aimed at educators and parents, including one called "Nurturing Concentration." That segment includes an interview with the headmaster of a school. He offers opinions on the connection between exercise and improved concentration - but the segment serves as more of a marketing testimonial for the product than an informational segment providing any real supporting data or specific strategies.
Adventure to Fitness isn't the most original program of its kind but it does promote a healthy, active lifestyle. It portrays physical activity as fun rather than a dreary obligation. Fueled by that attitude, its simple aerobic-type exercises, likable host, and colorful animation probably will inspire preschool and early-elementary-aged couch spuds to join in the fun and, in the process, burn off a few extra calories.
