Review:

Play Music is a Los Angeles-based, music and movement program for babies, toddlers, preschoolers and their families. This collection of favorites from their music program includes original songs, American folk music, and traditional music from around the world, performed by a variety of instructors and guests.

Though primarily designed to support those who have participated in the program, the CD works well on its own. Each song is given simple musical settings, perfect for singing along. The CD opens with the spritely welcoming song "Hello My Friends," sung by co-producer Willie Aron, who also contributes the sweet "Bathtub Song." and decidedly Un-Dylanesque participatory song "Positively Third Street." Julie Ingram contributes lead vocals to another great movement song "Buffalo Gals," as well as sharing vocals with Jorge Calderon on the English/Spanish poultry-celebrating tune "Los Pollitos." Other contributors include children's music band Lucky Diaz on "Crawdad Song," Kristin Mooney on the freeze song "Rock and Roll," and Randy Kaplan on the old-timey state and repeat song "John the Rabbit." The great and quirky folk singer Victoria Williams even contributes vocals to the French language "Fais Do Do," supported by famed fiddler Kevin Eastman.
