Review:

Outer Space, created by Dino O'Dell and the T-Rex All-Stars, is led by actor/musician Kevin Dolan, who for fifteen years has taught music, drama, language arts and improvisation at preschools, elementary schools, theaters, churches and libraries. Dolan possesses a pleasing and warm tenor, and is a skilled songwriter and musician. The music works best on tunes such as the slinky and astronomically informative title track, and similarly themed "The Planets." There is the hip-hop flavored silliness of "Zar is My Name," about a very musical alien, too. Elsewhere, O'Dell and the T-Rex All-Stars deliver the sensitive folk of "Try Try Again," and the funky reggae geographical lesson of "Around the World." The Samba-flavored "Colors of the Rainbow" is a good movement song, and "It's All Right" is a gentle, lilting song that reassures children against their most basic fears. The CD also includes the sweet counting song "Dragonfly," the rockabilly celebration of breakfast in "Flapjacks" and the gentle album closer "Say Goodnight" which is reminiscent of the works of James Taylor. Although young children may not understand the cynical humor in "Sugar Breakfast Cereal," the adults-in-charge will find its tongue in cheek presentation delicious.
