Sandcastle Magic

Sandcastle Magic

Spring 2013 Music
Ages: All Ages
Producer: Ginalina
CD Price: $9.99

Vancouver-based singer-songwriter Ginalina takes a modern, gentle folk approach to her songs that inspire imaginative play and creativity in children. Her background as an early childhood teacher and mother is evident in both her songwriting, and singing, which shows influence of musicians such as Dar Williams, Catie Curtis and Jonatha Brooke.

On her first album, Sandcastle Magic, she creates music that evokes images of picnics, playgrounds, reading, and the importance of family. Her lovely, delicate vocals blend well with the stately acoustic sounds of piano, guitar, fiddle, ukulele, and even some melodic kazoo. The album contains fifteen original songs, which perfectly captures the purity and joy of childhood. Her lyrics and even her vocals are child-like in their innocence and directness. "Picnic in May," features a Vince Guaraldi-esque piano melody, and captures the idyllic feeling of a springtime outing, while "L-O-V-E" employs a soft-shoe shuffle, and "Wandering" celebrates the timeless joys of nature.

Other highlights include her celebration of art-making song "Mona Lisa," her tribute to grandparents in "Wrinkly Hands," and the country waltz "Cozy Old Nook.

The CD is excellently produced, with clear, simple graphics, eco-friendly packaging, full lyrics and credits, and obviously a lot of love. In these complex and busy times, filled with electronic distractions, Ginalina's music comes as a breath of fresh, country air, sweetened by the innocence of youth, and acting as healing balm for children and their parents.
