Review:

22learn’s Alphabet Aquarium will teach little ones to recognize their letters and identify what sounds each makes. The app is designed for children to practice one letter at a time of their choosing. When they touch a letter onscreen, they are brought to a series of simple challenges. First, they put together a puzzle in the shape of the chosen letter. Next, they are instructed to tap the chosen letter from a selection of three letters on screen. When they choose the correct one, a puzzle in the shape of something beginning with that letter appears. The narrator emphasizes, for example, that “F is for flamingo” when the puzzle is finished. Children then match the silhouette of an object beginning with F to its picture.

Alphabet Aquarium’s approach to letter learning respects the learning style of young children. Instructions are always read out loud, for one. Our evaluators also liked that the challenges for each letter are short, and that they vary enough so as not to become repetitive. The charming beach theme and gentle soundtrack of waves and wind enhance the app’s appeal further.
