Saige Doll and Book

Saige Doll and Book

Spring 2013 Toys
Ages: 8 & Up
Manufacturer: American Girl
Price: $110.00

The appeal of the American Girl dolls lies not only in their quality construction and artistic presentation, though those are factors, but more importantly in the elaborate life stories that come with every character. Saige, the 2013 Girl of the Year, from the line of contemporary characters, is an artist (and horse lover) facing a very real problem: Disappearing funding for arts education in her local schools. Her grandmother takes action with fundraisers and awareness campaigns, and Saige does her best to stay involved in any way she can.

The Saige doll comes with her featured outfit, including boots, ring (tiny and, unfortunately, easily lost), and earrings, as well as with the first Saige storybook. The doll is pretty and durable; years of experience with the American Girl company make it safe to say that she will stand up to the enthusiastic play of a girl in love with her doll. The story is naturally more rosy than the real world can sometimes be, but it sends an undeniably positive message about standing up for what matters by doing one's best. The doll is expensive, but when a girl finds a character to whom she can relate, it is worth the price for the high-quality toy.
