Pelican CoveSpring 2013 Games
In SimplyFun's Pelican Cove, each player gets a playing board and eight pelicans, each a different color. Eight cards are dealt from the deck that indicate rules (red pelican must be on one of these specific spaces, yellow pelican must be next to black pelican, black pelican must be across from blue pelican, etc.) Players use logic and algebraic thinking to figure out where each pelican should go.
My 10-year-old daughter played the game with another 10-year-old and an 8-year-old. Once they figured it out, they all enjoyed playing. As with any original game concept, it took a bit of time before they understood the rules and the game play. There are some curveballs. In some rounds, it is not possible to satisfy all the conditions, and it's interesting to watch kids figure out that there is no perfect solution. When the friends left, they said, "That game was hard but fun."
The game comes with a 45 second timer/hourglass. Some of the kids found it stressful to be timed, and the game did not suffer from being played without the timer. The game cards are divided into different levels of difficulty, so that it is possible to play an easier or a harder version of the same game. Overall, we found this an engaging game, age appropriate for 8 and up, that seems like one my daughter will want to play over and over.
