Review:

Make Clay Charms is a creative, high-quality craft kit offered by Klutz. Packaged neatly and attractively in a handy, ready-to-use, easy-to-store box, the kit includes nine brightly colored bars of clay, a clay-shaping tool, a specially formulated glaze, a drying and display stand, a charm bracelet, jump rings, charm loops, and an instruction book.

The full-sized book includes instructions and diagrams for creating over thirty different charms, including several dessert charms (ice cream cones, s'mores, cupcakes, lollipops), healthy foods (strawberries, apples, peas) and animals (owls, cats, pigs, dogs). After children shape their products, they insert a charm ring, and bake the charms at 250 degrees for 20 minutes. The resulting charms are very cute, and this is a fun project especially for girls who enjoy charms and charm bracelets.

The recommended age for this kit is 8 and up, which our reviewers found appropriate. The shapes are a bit tricky to make, and the polymer clay itself is somewhat toxic (and over-baking can release toxic fumes.)

This kit was the start of a new hobby for our reviewers' daughters. We can easily imagine children turning this fun hobby into a way to produce items that might be sold at school fundraisers as an alternative to sugary snacks. Even after the included materials are depleted, more can easily be purchased for use with the Clay Charms instruction and idea book.
