Spring 2013 Puzzles
Ages: 8 & Up
Manufacturer: Popular Playthings
Price: $19.99

Interlock, from the educational toy company Popular Playthings, is a challenging logic game made up of twelve rectangular block pieces, each with one plug and one socket. The plug on one piece must fit into the next piece's socket so that no plugs or sockets show. Plug and socket placement varies from piece to piece.

The objective is to build each of 50 different shapes presented in the game brochure. Shapes get progressively more difficult, and there is often more than one solution, but the progression of the challenges is good. The easier, entry-level shapes give users a chance to build confidence, fire their mathematical engines up, and take off. The more difficult shapes are a handful for any accomplished puzzle solver. It's satisfying to solve each challenge, find alternate solutions and then move onto the next. Hints are also included, as well as the full solutions for each shape. The blocks are sleek and simple to use.

Good design and well-thought-out puzzles make this a very engaging and mentally stimulating game.
