Nancy B's Science Club Binoculars and Wildlife Activity JournalSpring 2013 Toys
Nancy B's Science Club Binoculars are sized for children and offer 4x magnification and a compass. The binoculars come with an excellent 22 page activity journal. The first and last pages of the journal contain pictures of animals and birds children might see (sparrow, mallard, mourning dove, etc.), and the rest provides space for journal entries and "binocular challenges".
The journal prompts children to think about and analyze what they are seeing in nature through their binoculars. It discusses extensively different types of ecosystems (e.g. wetlands vs. prairie vs. ocean vs. rainforest) and frequently asks children to draw what they are seeing through the binoculars. One exercise is to write a story about an observed animal, another is to think about what an animal would see if it observed the reader at 3 times during the day. A third exercise is a chart for tracking what animals the child has seen. Parents appreciated these exercises and found them very well developed and creative.
Drawn in by the warm Nancy B character guiding them through each activity, children completed several activities on their own. Parents looked forward to using the binoculars together on future hiking trips and backyard explorations. These expeditions, however, won't be guided by the compass attached to the binoculars: It sometimes spun erratically and failed to point north.
