Quirky is the new classic in Polly Horvath's hilarious chapter book mystery.

Horvath's characters are indelibly etched, filling her story with charm, intrigue, and fun. The dialogue is witty, the details are rich. Not a moment or word is wasted.

For starters, Mr. and Mrs. Bunny wear fedoras and drive a red Smart Car, the garlic bread loving Marmot has translator skills that rival those used at the UN, the stately albeit shady Grand Poobah Fox is aka The Enemy, and dear Madeline, who's called eccentric because she prefers getting up a 5am to take two ferries and two busses to a real school to being homeschooled by her hippie parents.

When Madeline's parents (their real names are Harry and Denise, but insist that everyone call them Flo and Mildred) are kidnapped, she enlists Mr. and Mrs. Bunny, Detectives Extraordinaire, to help find them. Mr. Bunny hates to spend money and misses more than an occasional social cue. Mrs. Bunny moves from one project phase to another (from decoupage to detectives) and is always sociable, even if she's not feeling her usual buoyant bunny self. The husband and wife team are polylingual; they speak Fox, Marmot and Bird—the romance languages. But Mrs. Bunny finds them both esoteric and impractical and thinks they should learn Squirrel.

Horvath's vivacious pacing keeps readers tuned in and turning pages. Sophie Blackall's illustrations add a perfectly suited old-fashioned stamp to the modern tone of this harebrain tale. Yes, it's kooky, but it's also about kindness, family, and trust. Read it alone, or aloud, but just read it.
