Review:

George Bahlke collected eighteen of the animal poems written by Valerie Worth in her lifetime. This collection of prose poems reveals her love of animals and her insight into their natures. Her words are musical and evocative. The middle verse of three in "Wood Thrush," which compares his song to the words humans have given the calls of the blue jay and cardinal, says:

"But the wood thrush
Sings without words,
Filling the air with
Silver and water..."

The poems are displayed on double-page, solid color backgrounds with the large, beautiful signature collage illustrations of Steve Jenkins, illustrator of a previous collection of Worth's animal poems. His bold bull, for example, has an appropriate red background and dramatically covers three-fourths of the spread. He masterfully captures the essences of Worth's poems from bulls to fireflies.
