Review:

From the worst word through the last, Charles de Lint and illustrator Charles Vess create a breathtaking fantastical setting in The Cats of Tanglewood Forest.

Lillian Kindred, a young orphan, lives with her aunt at the edge of a forest filled with fairies and magical cats. Lillian's aunt has warned her repeatedly about the spirits, specifically not to trouble them. And Lillian doesn't intend to, but after falling asleep beneath the grandfather beech tree one day, she's bitten by a poisonous snake. Nearing death, she is miraculously revived but as a kitten. The cats have performed magic to save her life, but Lillian wants her old life back.

Lillian's journey to reclaim her human form leads her to some colorful creatures, and more spells and potions and magic. All of it, even with the best of intentions, is dangerous. As Old Mother Possum, the bottle witch, tells her, "it never works out quite the way you think it will."

There are themes of altering fate, and how events in a chain affect outcome. This is the precise reason the black panther forbids the cats from practicing magic. It's also what makes this story enchanting.
