Pajanimals: Pajama Party

Fall 2013 DVD
Ages: Infant - 6 yrs.
DVD Price: $9.99

This 60-minute DVD collection includes five party-themed stories featuring The Pajanimals, from the popular PBS Kids Sprout series created by The Jim Henson Company (of Muppet fame).

The Pajanimals (pajama animals, get it?) are Cowbella, Apollo, Sweet Pea Sue, and Squacky, a sweet crowd of puppet siblings who tend to come up with troubling questions right before bedtime. When the lights go out their imaginations shift into high gear and they head off on an adventure that reveals the answers to their questions. Each episode includes energetic musical numbers and storylines impart important lessons about kindness, character, cooperation, and social skills.

Three stories here take on birthday themes. In “Happy Birthday Sweet Pea Sue,” Sweet Pea Sue lies awake worrying about her party scheduled for the next day. Will the guests like the treats and games she has planned? In “Apollo’s Special Day,“ Cowbella is jealous of the attention her brother is getting on his birthday. And in “A Present for Mom,” each Pajanimal worries about finding the perfect gift for Mom’s birthday. A nighttime trip to Birthday Land soothes their worries and helps them focus on what’s most special about birthdays: Celebrating a loved one with friends and family.

The remaining two episodes on the DVD stick with the celebratory theme. In “Pajama Dance Party,“ a wild pre-bedtime dance party ends in a collision that leaves Cowbella and Squacky mad at each other, leading to a lesson about the importance of saying those two magic words, ”I’m sorry.” And in “Sing a Pajanimal Song,” the gang forms a band but Apollo needs encouragement when he doesn’t pick up the singing and instrumental skills as quickly as he’d like.

The Jim Henson Company has a reputation for excellence and The Pajanimals certainly continue in that tradition. Young children in the preschool to kindergarten age range will love this kind and happy crew. Parents, don’t be fooled by the nighttime garb and bedtime themes. The Pajanimals are filled with exuberance and little viewers will be revved up with energy after watching these celebratory episodes so plan to play them loooooong before lights-out time.
