I Like Everything About You (Yes I Do!)Fall 2013 Music
Irresistible rhythms and a sense of human connection and warmth infuse these intercultural, life-celebrating songs. Performed with dancing verve by Crosspulse Percussion Ensemble and rooted in African traditions of instrumentation, vocalization, and movement, each track is a discrete universe of sound and meaning. Sweet Honey in the Rock's "Breaths" honors those who have gone before ("and the voice of the world turns"), but who remain "in the resting trees…in the crying grass, in the moaning rocks…" "Jalan-Jalan," from Indonesia, intrigues with unusual harmonic and lead vocals and body slaps and taps. The call-and-response "Little Liza Jane" is a familiar sing-along, clap-along pleasure. The title track, alive with layered vocals, multiple percussion instruments and a notably soothing beat, was inspired by Oakland-based poet Paradise, according to the liner notes, which give snippets of information about each song.
