Review:

Singer/songwriter Lena Pennino-Smith's first album for young children is a short and sweet collection of 13 original songs. The tunes owe much to musical theater productions, and Pennino sings lead on eight of the songs, with the remaining ones carried by a fine cast of guest vocalists. There are happy greetings songs such as "The Hello Song," silly nonsense songs as in "Happy as Clams," the pirate themed "Hugh Stinkfoot," and the crustacean country of "Grabby the Crabby." Other highlights are the acappella tale of alien babies "Welcome To This World," the gentle acoustic song of "Fireflies," and a bluesy ode which addresses the need for parental coffee in "Cup of Jo-Jo," sung by guest Kim Volpe. A good group of backing musicians, including Lena's husband Brian Smith on piano, supports the album. Lyrics are available on Lena's website.
