Review:

William Alexander won the National Book Award for this fantasy, which is rich with details, imagination, and humor. Many of the elements are typical of the fantasy genre-magical creatures, orphaned or wandering children, mysterious circumstances, and a menaced society. There is also a deliberate theatrical component to this book, which makes for a clever twist. For instance, chapters are named like parts of a play (e.g., "Act One, Scene One"), and masks, long a symbol of the stage, are at the center of the plot. Alexander himself reads the audio version, and his voice is soft but intense, lingering over words. This is a great choice for readers of fairytales or fantasy, and would make for excellent bedtime listening.
