Review:

This lyrical story by American Book Award winner Benjamin Alire Sáenz is for readers who love language and are unafraid to explore the depths of human emotion. While written for teens, there is much to appreciate for adult readers. In fact, the complexity of the writing and the subject matter itself, the journey from boyhood to manhood, require a certain degree of maturity. It is a love story-love of family, love of oneself, and, on a significant level, the growing love between friends. Sáenz asks, "Why is there a riot in the heart when we love?" and "What is that thing in the pit of your stomach called desire?" The audio version runs a leisurely 7.5 hours, but the characters and the graceful writing draw the listener in. Broadway composer and actor Lin-Manuel Miranda (he received Tony nods for In the Heights) gives great voice to the story. This is a beautifully written coming-of-age tale, but one that parents and teachers should prepare to discuss with younger readers.
