Review:

The Bazillions are the creation of Twin Cities' parents/educators/singer-songwriters Adam and Kristin Marshall. The couple write songs for, and with, their students. After a while, both students and parents began asking for a CD, so along with their indie pop band The Humbugs, the Marshalls recorded and released Rock-n-Roll Recess, under their alter-ego The Bazillions. Heads or Tales is their second children's music CD and is a straight-ahead rock album for kids. Some of the songs have literacy components to them as in "Silent e," "Prefix or Suffix," and the witty and clever "Similes and Metaphors," which explains these concepts by actually using them, set to a Todd Rundgren-like arrangement. Other tunes include celebrations of birthday presents as in "Out of the Box," the Rockpile-esque "You're Embarrassing Me," and their ode to wishing to be older in "Front Seat." There is even a nice little slinky tune about geometry on the clever "Perimeter Around the Area." Elsewhere is the rocking "Homework," before the album ends with quiet little ode to a "Rainy Day Clubhouse." Adam Marshall possesses a classic tenor voice, reminiscent of The Everly Brothers, Lindsey Buckingham and the Twin Cities' own The Jayhawks. Heads or Tales is housed in eco-friendly packaging, utilizing fun graphics. We only wish the packaging included lyrics to these great songs.
