Review:

The Best in Me, Dave Kinnoin's seventh solo CD for children, continues his tradition of handling some pretty important subjects with style, expert musicality, and taste. With seventeen songs averaging around three minutes each, this album is a treat.

The album opens with the rocking, Springsteen-like "A Lot of Good in There," that outlines the best qualities to look for in a new friend. In "Enormously Inconvenient," Kinnoin looks at the futility of prejudice, while "Happy for Myself" spins a Harry Chapin-like tale about temptation and honesty. Elsewhere, "Things Kids Figure Out," navigates through complex emotions, set to a nice Salsa beat, "It's Good to Love Somebody" celebrates family ties, and "Person of Character" examines the value of real friendship, set to some Burt Bacharach style pop. "I'll Be Me" is a sweet tale of grandmotherly wisdom, "Lemonade Stand," is set to an electric sitar lead, "What You Do" is a country song about honesty and grades, while "Give Us a Chance" is a tale about owning up to wrong doing.

Kinnoin has a lovely tenor, reminiscent of Livingston Taylor and David Wilcox. His songs of honesty, kindness and responsibility are refreshing. Though his lyrics occasionally dip toward the overtly emotional, the sentiments are spot on. This collection is further enhanced by the addition of six instrumental renditions of the songs. A large booklet with full lyrics (and even chords) is encased in eco-friendly packaging. Dave Kinnoin is a prolific and astute songwriter, fine singer and musician, and a welcomed voice in children's music.
