The Incredible Flexible YouFall 2013 Music
Tom Chapin has been dedicated to writing and performing quality music for children (and adults) for decades. In his latest recording for kids, The Incredible Flexible You, Chapin offers new songs written with his songwriting partner Phil Galdston. This collection features just about everything you could wish for in a great children's music album. Witty lyrics, stellar musicianship, and memorable tunes combine to make music that is educational and fun. Each tune was written to accompany a lesson in The Incredible Flexible You curriculum for the preschool and elementary years. The program employs a series of books designed to support social and emotional learning in children ages 4 to 7 through stories, dramatic play, and music.
The opening track is the cannily catchy ode to the human brain, "Where You Think A Thought." Emotions, thoughts and feelings are explored in the jaunty ditty "Show Me What You're Feeling," while "The Plan" promotes organized thinking, and "Think with Your Eyes," sings the praises of visual observation. Group interactions are addressed with the danceable, percussive counting song "In the Group," while using all of one's senses is delightfully illustrated in the participatory song "Listen with All of You." Chapin employs a snaky reggae rhythm for his song about expectations in "My Own Detective." Elsewhere, critical thinking and logical deductions are examined in "Look, Think, Guess, Know" and flexible thinking is exercised in the album's rocking title track. Each song (except for the ending banjo-driven tune "You Can Bend") is linked with a storybook within the curriculum. Chapin is backed by a wonderful group of musicians, and a tuneful kids' chorus. The album includes full lyrics and links to each book.
At a time when children increasingly need further positive instruction in social interaction and critical thinking, The Incredible Flexible You is as entertaining as it is important.
