Once Upon A Time: The Storytelling Card GameFall 2013 Games
Once Upon a Time is a storytelling card game with a twist. While many storytelling games are cooperative in nature, with no winner, this game adds a dimension of competition with players being able to interrupt each other in an attempt to use all of their story cards first. The game starts with one storyteller. A person can interrupt if they have an interrupt card or a card that matches the current topic in the story. When the next player interrupts, they continue the current storyline until they are interrupted.
Once Upon a Time requires attention and problem solving abilities as the players try to figure out when they might be able to interrupt the current storyteller. It also draws upon players' creativity and imagination as they attempt to expand the plot and develop characters.
While the game's directions are quite detailed, once players understand how to play, the game moves quickly. Some of the directions require judgment calls such as whether or not a player has adequately introduced their story line or whether their ending matches the story. This may require adult input. Overall, this is a fun game for children who like storytelling. The cards are beautifully illustrated and with 110 cards, the story possibilities are endless.
