Review:

The LeapPad Ultra is the latest in a line of pad/tablet devices from LeapFrog. LeapFrog has stayed true to itself and its approach to the market by continuing to make tablets that operate using its proprietary interface and operating system. This is a distinct differentiator from the rest of the children’s tablet market, which typically build child-friendly interfaces on top of the Android platform.

Some people would argue that that difference is LeapFrog’s downfall, in that its users don’t have access to the hundreds of thousands of apps available for Android tablets. Many parents take the alternate view, though, and prefer not to let their children have access to those apps. LeapFrog provides value in offering only wholesome, quality content, meaning that parents don’t have to do any extra work to keep kids safe.

The LeapPad Ultra includes some built-in apps and games, which provide very clean, wholesome fun for your young child. They are well-designed and well-executed, giving parents a sense of ease and comfort. Children cannot "break out" of the protected mode and get access to the whole crazy world; With the LeapPad Ultra, they are in eternally child land.

The LeapPad Ultra’s hardware includes what has become the de facto size screen in a tablet for kids, 7 inches. The screen is relatively low-resolution, but it does not need to be top-of-the-line for the apps it displays. The tablet has a large bevel around the screen making it easy to hold, but the weight of the LeapPad Ultra is definitely on the heavy side for young children. It includes a stylus, though everything can be done either with the stylus or with your finger. The LeapPad Ultra also has 2 cameras, one on front and one on back, and includes both photo and video apps.

LeapPad’s user interface is nearly perfect for children in the age range, and it feels warm and welcoming when the tablet is powered up. The extra details such as voice welcome, voice instructions for children, and background music, are details typically missed by other children’s tablet developers.

If you want your child to have a tablet and you believe very strongly in providing only wholesome, "G" rated content, and don’t mind spending extra for additional content, then the LeapPad Ultra is a great tablet choice for you.
