Green Science / Salt Water Powered Robot

Green Science / Salt Water Powered Robot

Fall 2013 Toys
Ages: 8 & Up
Price: $14.00

The Green Science Salt-Powered Robot uses surprisingly simple ingredients to make an aluminum-air (oxygen) battery to operate a tiny electric motor on a small robot that you build. It takes only a few minutes to snap together the robot components and assemble the battery. After making a super saturated solution of salt and water, you draw a few drops into a pipette and squeeze them through the battery lid. Slide the battery into the battery holder and the robot zips across the floor. The robot ran continuously for about 15 minutes, but its movements became slower and slower with time. The battery components can be rinsed and reused (reportedly for up to one hour of continuous use), and the kit includes additional materials to assemble an additional battery.

The well-written and illustrated one-page instruction sheet provides troubleshooting tips (that we did not need) and gives an intriguing discussion of the chemical reactions and science behind this amazing energy source. In addition, "FUN FACTS" explain the applications of this battery in military equipment and provides information on promising, related technology with iron-air batteries.
