Review:

Touch the Thing is a simple framework to assist children in learning language by connecting a word to an image. Twelve familiar scenes are illustrated with many common objects. When a child touches one of the objects, like a dog, a sign above the scene reveals the text associated with that word while a narrator speaks the word. Children can explore 220 clearly pronounced words in 12 languages.

In Touch the Thing, there is little cultural diversity evident in the illustrations. The app is intended for a native English speaking audience. On the pages with one of the languages other than English, a second tap on the object narrates and spells the word in English.

A simple quiz feature reinforces what children will learn while playing with this app, making it a great tool for learning an additional language. The illustrations are bright and cheerful. There's a living room, a kitchen, a bathroom, a classroom, and scenes of food and animals outdoors. On the last page, a young girl waves goodbye.
