Animal Planet Hide & Seek PetsFall 2013 Mobile Apps
With Animal Planet Hide & Seek Pets, preschoolers have a new way to learn about animals. The app is designed for pre-readers, and though there is some text, it is all read aloud. Children navigate the app from a home screen featuring a hamster in his wheel. Icons representing different animals surround the wheel. When an icon is chosen, children enter a minigame for that animal. They pop bubbles to reveal a fish, unravel a ball of yarn to find a cat, and move blocks to uncover a bird.
The next screen offers a puzzle featuring the animal, quick facts about the animal, letter tracing pages, memory games, and counting activities. Testers found these activities age appropriate, and not frustrating.
Once your child has explored the animals featured in this app, they may wish to try the creative activities offered. There are pages to color and a one-octave keyboard screen to play. The latter can be made to sound like a barking dog, squeaking hamster, mewing cat, or chirping bird. And, yes, traditionalists can choose to make the keyboard sound like piano keys. For very little ones, the decorating-by-sticker page is a simpler art exercise.
With many options for play and lots of cute animal imagery, Animal Planet Hide & Seek Pets will be an app with long term play value for young pet enthusiasts.
