Review:

Mr. Tiger is tired of being civilized. He is tired of speaking in polite tones, and walking on two legs, and wearing clothes. When he tries to shake up the city, however, his friends tell him in no uncertain terms that wild behavior belongs only in the wilderness. Mr. Tiger appreciates the change of scenery…but he misses his friends, too. What is a wild tiger to do?

The clever and expressive illustrations of this new picture book provide its chief appeal. The animals' facial expressions and gestures are easily readable and humorous, and Brown's use of color is extremely effective. Mr. Tiger is the only bright orange blob in a world of grays and browns; but as he tires of the brighter green wilderness, its colors fade, too. The story of a protagonist wanting to break out of polite routine is a fairly common one, but young readers and their parents will enjoy Mr. Tiger's rediscovery of minor rebellion.
