Review:

A child is so "willful, thrillful" that his parents send him to live with his grandmother, hoping that she can control him. She tells him stories about giants with one, two, three heads that will eat him if they can catch him. Instead of being scared, the singing, flute-playing boy relishes the stories, singing out,

Tanto, tanto, I'm wild and I'm free.
Grandma's stories can't scare me.
I'm bold! I'm brave!
And though I may be small,
No many-headed giant
Scares ME at all.

Of course, the inevitable happens, but this little trickster outwits the giants and runs back to his grandmother's loving embrace—only seemingly repentant.

Children love naughty boys in any guise, but this boy is depicted in Ashley Bryan's inimitable bold colors that match the boldness of our hero's personality. The bright, beautiful pictures capture many-headed giants that are deliciously villainous but not too scary for young readers—no mean trick.
