Review:

This sterling publication from the Cricket family celebrates the diverse world we all share, taking "the other" out of the equation by spotlighting the commonalities that connect us. Faces explores cultures and customs around the globe and here in the United States; some issues focus on a single country, some on an all-encompassing theme.

"The Power of Music" issue, for example, examined the music and instruments of different countries, as well as the multitude of ways we utilize music. The issue covered music played for pleasure, composed for national anthems and as political protest, music as the subject of research and music used as therapy. The issue looked at bell ringing, the history of musical notation, and featured a Wassily Kandinsky-inspired exercise in "painting" music. Readers were then asked to send in videos or supply links to their own musical performances.

Faces magazine is an excellent resource for youth as they move through the ages of tween to teen and start making connections to the world around them in entirely new ways. The publication's recipe for success: nourishment for hearts and minds.
