Ocean Mysteries with Jeff Corwin

Spring 2014 Television
Ages: 13 - 16 yrs.
Rating: TV G
Review:

Not many people can boast—or post—selfies with Kodiak bears, but Jeff Corwin is the exception. The popular conservationist is known for getting close to the action for a good cause. Corwin's programs offer the perfect blend of education, adventure and excitement while introducing viewers to otherwise inaccessible habitats.

Ocean Mysteries, sponsored by the Georgia Aquarium, can be a bit of a misnomer. While it starts and ends each episode amidst the spectacular tanks of its sponsor, the show covers ocean-adjacent habitats or animals loosely tied to ocean themes. Still, it reminds us just how important and far reaching ocean life can be.

Corwin is a likeable personality, providing professional and age-appropriate scientific explanations for each segment. With the help of wildlife experts, park rangers and scientists, he creates a compelling story in a taut 30 minutes. Safety for people and the animals is emphasized often and Corwin deliberately alerts viewers to steps taken to protect and help the animals; especially when tracking and collaring for research. His clear annunciation is helpful if a bit overdone. Geared toward tweens, the program has the production value and appeal to entice animal and conservation enthusiasts of all ages.
