All In with Laila Ali

All In with Laila Ali

Spring 2014 Television
Ages: 13 - 16 yrs.
Rating: TV G

The motto of this show is "no matter what you dream - all it takes is to go all in." Host Laila Ali is a great pick to emcee the All In program because she's an accomplished athlete herself, the youngest daughter of legendary boxer Muhammad Ali. The concept is to showcase athletes and their inspiring stories.

In one episode, Ali shares the story of Chuck Patterson, 43, who wanted to try to ride a huge Maui wave on skis instead of a surfboard. He would be pulled by a Jet Ski until he could catch the massive wave, referred to as "Jaws." Patterson worries things could get "really gnarly." But he finally pulls it off just fine. "I love being different," he explains as to why this has been such an important goal of his.

Other stories include a guy who runs, jumps and flips amid the ruins of Jordan, two people who like to kite surf on salt piles off the coast of Brazil, a skier who was told she might not be able to walk after an accident, only to see her six years later schussing down the slopes once again. The episode ends with a photographer filming a model in New York City. It was a little harder to see how that fit into the All In show, except that the photographer explained he's curious and was climbing around abandoned buildings to get the perfect shot. (Kids, don't try that in your neighborhood!)

Overall, the goal of the show is admirable, but the stories could be presented in a way that makes them just a little more inspiring and meaningful.
