Review:

The Baltimore-based sextet Milkshake create great rock, country, rap and pop music for kids. Led by singer Lisa Mathews and guitarist Mikel Gehl, (of the indie rock group Love Riot) they mix varied styles of music, with solid songwriting and performance.

For their fifth recording Got a Minute?, they present a CD of 33 short songs. Inspired by 13 songs they wrote for PBS KIDS, which were each a minute long. All of those songs are included on this disc, and the band set about crafting 20 more tunes that were no longer than 2 minutes. The variety of music styles is well represented; from the stadium rocker "Baltimore," to the pedal steel driven country style of "Looking Out the Window," and the bagpipe infused, faux-Celtic stomper "We Just Wanna Have Fun." Elsewhere, "Girls Wanna Dance" is a pop rocker, where Mathews' vocal recalls Sheryl Crow, and Cathy Fink & Marcy Marxer guest on "Snowy" a bluegrass tale of a little white dog. The beauty of the short format of these songs is if one tune does not grab you, there will be another one quickly. Having said this, just about every song is a winner. The well-designed album is packaged in a plastic-free slipcover, includes lovely cover and interior art, and comes with a poster that features all the lyrics. The songs are well-crafted, professionally recorded, and performed, and the whole project is fun. Best of all, these are songs your kids will want to hear repeatedly, and parents will be happy to comply.
