Sesame Workshop's Child Resilience initiative, launched to equip children aged 3-8 to better face some of life's major challenges, has masterfully tackled a truly sensitive topic in Little Children, Big Challenges: Incarceration. Reviewed here is the Sesame Workshop online parental toolkit containing all of the multi-media resources of the Incarceration resource kit for parents and caregivers.

The number of children with incarcerated parents has risen sharply (80%) in the last two decades. Parents' Choice Foundation is unaware of any resource with such a comprehensive and age appropriate wealth of videos, stories, tips and discussion points which make communication about a difficult issue accessible. Seeking to provide emotional support alleviating confusion, anxiety and loneliness, this online parental toolkit supplies a language to express feelings and creatively support the child for both the at home caregiver and the incarcerated parent. Especially appreciated are the videos included—despite the buffering and download issues. They are uncompromisingly honest, the perfect length (approximately 2 minutes each), and powerful in their ability to create an atmosphere where viewers can identify with emotions suffered by children separated from their incarcerated parent. The tips for incarcerated parents and caregivers, like the messaging of the rest of the toolkit, emphasizes the importance of routine and communication and helps equip adults to provide both.

Every adult who interacts with children, should avail themselves of this beautifully presented, unflinching address of a subject generally ignored. With nearly 3 million children in the United States who have an incarcerated parent, Little Children, Big Challenges: Incarceration parental toolkit should be a much used resource.
