Review:

A whole new era of The Wiggles kicks off in this first DVD release featuring the new character line-up of Anthony, Emma, Lachy and Simon. But Wiggles fans, don't worry, the new group sticks to that same popular formula blending songs, skits, and high-wattage smiles to teach early learning concepts and positive character traits.

The Wiggles Taking Off offers up 19 songs, some of them themed around traveling and safety. Most songs are presented as video vignettes and clips from The Wiggles' live concert tour. Additional songs and skits are performed in front of a live studio audience made up of young kids and their parents. These live studio elements add a nice energy and genuine laughs during audience-engagement gags and dance-along songs like Simon Says (featuring Wiggle Simon's impressive booming bass voice). The program also features old favorites like Captain Feathersword and Dorothy the Dinosaur.

The big question, of course, is how does this new Wiggles line up stack up against the previous (and beloved) characters who defined the brand? The new characters demonstrate big voices and boundless energy and no one will notice any difference in the song and dance styles of the group numbers. Yes, The Wiggles do now include a female named Emma—but it was a bit disappointing to see that her first solo song in the program was about wondering which bow she'll choose to wear in her hair. Other performances cover more gender-neutral territory and Emma proves she can wiggle with the rest of the guys sans stereotyping.

This DVD has a runtime of 60 minutes and it offers enough variety in its vignettes to keep its preschool fan base satisfied and smiling. Special features include a "Song Jukebox," an option for subtitles, a photo gallery, and a time-lapsed look at how The Wiggles' live studio was put together for this program.
