Montessori Math: Add and Subtract Large Numbers should be viewed as more of a learning tool than simply a child's game. Patterned after the type of hands-on learning used in Montessori instruction, it teaches addition and subtraction of multi-digit numbers through the use of stamp and bead manipulatives (with realistic sound effects) building up to abstract addition and subtraction of digits with carrying and borrowing. The app offers three timed games as well to challenge players to reach a rote ability, even on multi-digit numbers. Parents and teachers can set up individual accounts for each student to monitor their progress.

As players make progress, they collect points which can be spent in the Monster Lab, a fun environment for making funny-faced creatures as a reward and a break from math activities. For quick points and a drill on basic math facts, players can fill out addition and subtraction tables, earning a point for every element in the table and a chance to do more in the Monster Lab.

From a home-schooling parent's perspective, the only thing lacking from this app is a performance assessment tool; though the application itself adapts to an individual player's level based on past results, these results are not made readily available to the parent. Though this is not the most thrilling and dynamic application on the market, and thus not likely to have the greatest draw for the children themselves who need math practice, this is an outstanding option for teaching children and likely to result in real learning; parents and children together can find this a happy medium, and a grand step above flashcard drills or extra homework.
