Moose Math - by Duck Duck MooseSpring 2014 Mobile Apps
Moose Math, a series of leveled activities which encourage early math learning about numbers, counting, addition & subtraction, geometry, and measurement based on common core math standards for K-1. But keep reading; it's really fun.
The playful activities, created in consultation with an early learning and core curriculum specialist from Stanford University, are divided up into areas represented by buildings in a side-scrolling illustrated town. Children choose areas to explore by selecting a building (including smoothie shop and a pet shop) and must complete leveled activities in each building to be able to build their town. As they progress and complete levels, they are presented with different rewards along the way such as flowers for their building, new windows, etc.
These solidly crafted and creative lessons encourage youngsters to playfully learn. The activities and buildings that house the lessons are well designed, nicely illustrated, appropriately supported with music and sound, are replete with animated characters, and are effective at teaching specific math skills. The Moose Juice activity has players create smoothies while practicing counting, addition and subtraction; in Paint Pet players match the pets by counting the number of dots; Pet Bingo presents addition, subtraction and counting problems to solve. The Lost & Found activity sorts shapes and colors and the Duck Duck Moose version of Dot To Dot helps the Dust Funny find his way home.
Lots of fun to play and learn.
