Review:

The Genji (red tokens) and the Heike (black tokens) families of Ancient Japan are vying to control the Imperial Garden and seize the power of the Court. In this 2-player strategy game for ages 8+, the winner can be declared in one of the following ways: line up four family member tokens in a vertical, horizontal, or diagonal row; arrange family members in a 2 x 2 square, or block the opponent from completing those moves.

Simply put, gameplay consists of strategically replacing garden tiles with family tiles. Each garden tile is illustrated with an image of a plant (maple leaves, cherry tree blossoms, pine tree branches, or an iris) and a poetic symbol from Japanese literature (a rising sun, a poem flag, a bird or a rain cloud). Players take turns exchanging a clan token for a garden tile, replacing each tile with one that shares an image in common with the tile previously placed by the opponent.

The rules may be easy to learn, but mastering the strategy comes with patience, and keen observation.
