Crayola's "My Virtual Fashion Show" offers a new twist on fashion art: kids not only get to use their imaginations to color fashion templates into something original, but they also can see those images transformed onto a 3-D model using the compatible iOS/Android smartphone/tablet application. Seeing the artwork brought to life adds an entirely new thrill to the creative process.

The basic kit includes a purple plastic portfolio, twelve mini colored pencils and a 20-page sketch book. Each page shows the front and back of an outfit ready to be colored. There are ten different outfits (including dresses in varying lengths, shorts, and longer pants), each repeated only once, so the designs do not get old too quickly; design pages are keyed to the digital app so that it recognizes the shape of the design and scans it cleanly, eliminating any roughness around the edges.

The app allows the artist to customize the model's hair color and style, skin tone, facial features, and accessories (but not, alas, body types; every model has an identically perfect, slender, curvy figure) Our real world suggestion? Crayola could really set an example to young women and girls by allowing them to make the models look even more like most if us, something easily managed in a digital setting). It is genuinely delightful to see the images in three dimensions, though the real fun is in uploading the design and setting up the model; watching the slow procession of all designs on the runway one after another gets old quickly.

An 8-year-old tester brought design after design to be scanned and never tired of the portfolio; it is fortunate that the app allows the printing of additional design pages. She said, "My Virtual Fashion Show is cool because you can color fashion models and design their clothes and then they can walk the runway. You can also showcase your designs on runways in New York, Paris and Milan! And if you write your designer name in the app it will show in a box above the runway."
