Review:

Another deeply felt, highly accessible biographical tale from the inspired team of author Barbara Kerley and illustrator Edwin Fotheringham (The Extraordinary Mark Twain, What to Do About Alice?). A beautifully crafted and thoughtful portrait of influential 19th century Transcendentalist philosopher, poet, essayist and public speaker Ralph Waldo Emerson, it begins and ends with his love for his Concord home and springboards from this Emerson quote: "Every spirit builds itself a house, and beyond its house a world….Build therefore your own world." Emerson builds a world of family and good neighbors, of books, words and "evenings of grand discussion." When his beloved house is lost in a devastating fire, Emerson recovers his spirit in travels to far-flung places and in his return to Concord, welcomed by caring family and friends. Kerley's graceful text, complemented by well-chosen Emerson quotes sprinkled throughout, is matched by the sense of life and celebration in Fotheringham's illustrations.
