Review:

This beautiful book, the last in the late Stephen Huneck's series about Sally, a lively, loveable black lab, offers children (and adults) a gentle and comforting perspective on the loss of a pet told through sensitive text and Huneck's gallery-worthy woodcuts. As the book begins, the once adventurous Sally now moves slowly to protect her aching joints and would rather just lie in the sun than eat. When Sally wakes up the next morning frisky again, her pain gone, she knows that she's in heaven. Confident that she and her family will be reunited one day, Sally joyfully goes exploring, finding animal and human friends to play with, her favorite treats, Frisbees and sticks to chase, children happy to deliver tummy rubs and couches to curl up on. Best of all, Sally's wish that the family she left will adopt another dog to love comes true. The book, which includes a picture frame that readers can use for their own pet photo, patterned with images of angel-winged Sally soaring over the clouds, is dedicated to the memory of Huneck, his wife Gwen and the Dog Chapel the couple founded on Dog Mountain—-the Hunecks' 150-acre park in Vermont open to dog lovers and their canine companions.
