Review:

Patricia Polacco captures the childhood experiences, and challenges that formed the extraordinary woman that Clara Barton, founder of the American Red Cross, grew up to be. Born in 1821, and growing up with a severe speech impediment that isolated her from others, Clara Barton might never have found her path in life if not for the loving support, encouragement and protection of her brother Davie. He was her constant champion, enabling Clara to be educated at home and to develop her gift for healing–--a gift he would become the recipient of when his legs were broken in a near-fatal accident. Polacco, who shares Clara's family tree, wrote this graceful tale (followed by facts about the adult Clara Barton) based on handed down stories. That sense of authenticity is reflected in Polacco's pencil, marker and acrylic illustrations whose muted colors and notably expressive faces capture a resonant time and place. (Adults will read volumes in the rendering of Clara's mother.)
