Review:

Peppa Pig: The Balloon Ride is a DVD collection of 10 episodes from Peppa Pig, an animated interstitial series that plays in the U.S. between regularly scheduled programs on Nickelodeon's Nick Jr. channel. The series is produced out of Great Britain and it follows the gentle exploits of a preschool-ish-aged pig named Peppa, her family, and friends.

Animation and background music are light and airy, a delightful match for little Peppa's personality. Each storyline is revealed through character dialogue and a narrator who fills in simple plot details. In the title episode, Peppa and her family are thrilled to win a hot air balloon ride at a school fair . . . except the trip doesn't go quite as planned. In another episode titled George Catches a Cold, Peppa's little brother refuses to wear his rain hat, with uncomfortable results. Other episodes include storylines about helping Peppa's little brother George deal with his disappointment when a relative has a baby, displacing him as the littlest family member; Peppa's first time on ice-skates; and a family bike race. Plots generally focus on family values and building the skills to be a good friend. Some also include early learning concepts, such as counting and color recognition—like in the episode titled Painting, in which Daddy Pig is inspired by his children to revive an old hobby.

While a number of children's series feature animals with human characteristics, Peppa Pig rises above the pack with its combination of innocent humor, character development messages, and a vastly likable title character.
