Review:

Emmy Brockman, a talented singer/songwriter, as well as an early childhood educator, asked children ages 2 to 6 the following question: "What do you want to hear a song about?" Inspired by their answers, she then wrote 13 songs that make up the majority of her debut album, Dragon Dreams. The result is a lovely, musical collection, tailor-made for the under-seven crowd. Songs such as "Primary Color Birds," "Dinosaurs Are For Roaring," "Here Come the Train," and "Bunny Hop Bop," are sure to enchant and delight younger children and their parents, with their folk-based melodies. She also contributed nice arrangements of some traditional folk songs, such as "I Love My Roster," the obligatory "Itsy Bitsy Spider" is here and bilingual, and a gorgeous fiddle-aided rendition of "All the Pretty Horses." Brockman's friendly, pleasant voice and guitar playing are, by design, simple and accessible, and her backing musicians are all chosen for their particular talents. Like the music, the CD production and cover art is uncluttered and professionally executed, with lyrics available on her website, emmybrockman.com. In a time when children's music can be woefully overproduced, or gussied up with silly voices and slick studio trickery, Dragon Dreams is a refreshingly uncomplicated album for young children.
