LeapPad3

Ages: 3 - 9 yrs.
Price: $99.99
Review:

The LeapPad3 is LeapFrog's latest digital tablet with proprietary operating system and apps designed for children ages 3-9. It's well built, feels good in little hands, and has a nice set of tech specs like good screen resolution and decent cameras for the age group and a preloaded assortment of games. This model also includes WiFi to access LeapFrog's moderated web content.

But, here's the conundrum. LeapFrog (and some other kids tablet makers) do not allow outside developer content on the device; users must buy either their cartridges or their apps from their app store. On the upside, LeapFrog controls the content and experience and keeps it safe. On the down side, purchasing new content for the device often surprises the uninitiated parent. Parents accustomed to paying $ .99 cents and $1.99 for great smartphone apps are presented with an average cost of $20 for a single game or app for the LeapFrog devices. So there's the trade-off. You get a great controlled environment and selection of initial apps, but you'll pay dearly for additional content for the LeapPad3.
